Felted woodland mushrooms · video tutorial
Felt your own little woodland: a spotty red fly agaric, golden chanterelles and brown-capped mushrooms, all from soft merino wool, soap and water. It’s easier than it looks, even if you’ve never felted before.

Fly agarics, chanterelles, brown caps: the same technique with different templates and colours. Once you know it, you can grow a whole forest floor.

Like play dough, but wool
Felting mushrooms is a joyful way to start with wool. You lay soft merino fibres over a simple resist template, then use warm soapy water and your hands to shape the cap and stem in one piece.
Svetlana films every step from above so you can follow along: making the soapy water, laying out the wool, felting and shaping, and the finishing details that make each mushroom different. Then make another, and another. Fair warning: it’s very addictive.
Little mushrooms make lovely gifts.
What you’ll learn
Mix the right soapy water for felting, the simple way.
Cut mushroom templates in different sizes and felt around them to make hollow 3D shapes.
Build even layers of merino so each cap is strong, smooth and the right colour.
Rub, roll and shape the cap, gills and stem with your hands.
From the fly agaric’s white spots to the chanterelle’s frilly edge, bring each mushroom to life.
Change the size and colours for a whole family of mushrooms, decorations and gifts.
